What to Expect on Your First Class at Excel Combat Academy

Nervous about trying martial arts for the first time? Here's exactly what happens on your first day at Excel Combat Academy in Aguadilla — no experience needed.

Walking through the door of a martial arts gym for the first time can feel intimidating. What if everyone is way more advanced? What if I do something wrong? What if I get hurt?

We hear this all the time — and we get it. Most of our members felt the exact same way before their first class.

Here's the truth: your first class at Excel Combat Academy is designed for you, not for the experienced competitors. Here's what actually happens.

Before You Arrive

You don't need to bring anything special. Wear comfortable athletic clothing — shorts and a t-shirt work perfectly. If you have flip-flops or sandals for the mat area, bring them. If not, no worries.

You don't need to know anything about BJJ or Muay Thai. You don't need to be in shape. You don't need to have watched a single UFC fight.

Just show up.

What Happens When You Walk In

You'll be greeted — not sized up. Our coaches and members know what it's like to be new, and we take pride in making every first-timer feel welcome.

You'll talk briefly with a coach. They'll ask what brought you in, what you're hoping to get out of training, and whether you have any injuries we should know about. This isn't a test. It's just so we can take care of you properly.

During the Class

Every class starts with a warmup. This is where your body wakes up — light jogging, movement drills, maybe some stretching. Nothing will shock you.

From there, a coach demonstrates a technique. This could be a BJJ guard pass, a Muay Thai combination, or a basic self-defense sequence. You'll work with a partner at your own pace.

Coach David Perez Padua — who has over 30 years of martial arts experience — and our team of instructors will check on you personally during the class. They'll correct your form, answer questions, and make sure you understand what you're doing. No one gets left behind.

There is no ego on our mats. Experienced members here to help beginners, not embarrass them. That's the culture we've built.

What You'll Feel After

Tired? Probably. Proud of yourself? Absolutely.

Most new members leave their first class surprised — surprised they didn't get hurt, surprised how welcoming everyone was, surprised how much they enjoyed it.

A few common things you'll hear after day one:

  • "I wish I had done this years ago."
  • "I was so nervous walking in but the coaches were amazing."
  • "I'm already signed up for tomorrow."

We have over 150 five-star reviews from real Aguadilla families who started right where you are.
